Summary

For hundreds of years, the lack of technology and engineering knowledge prevented people from building a waterway that would connect the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific. Explorers, kings, soldiers, and scientists all pondered how to make the jungles and mountains of Panama yield to their desire for a canal that would open up new markets and shorten trade routes. Riding high off their success at building the Suez Canal in Egypt, the French sent workmen and engineers to Panama in the late 19th century, but ended the project when yellow fever and malaria proved to be insurmountable barriers. The project remained a failed endeavor until President Theodore Roosevelt used backroom deals and gunboat diplomacy to establish one of the largest engineering projects in history. In The Panama Canal, explore how the vision of a canal bisecting the narrow belt connecting North America with South America finally became reality.
