Summary

The Encyclopedia of Junior Science is designed to introduce young readers to basic scientific concepts using simple language and illustrations. This new 10-volume encyclopedia contains approximately 270 alphabetically arranged entries covering six core branches of science: biology, chemistry, Earth science, environmental science, physics, and space. Each colorful entry gives an introductory definition as well as clear illustrations and examples of how a particular scientific concept, such as air pressure, echoes, habitats, or microscopic life, relates to everyday life. Guide words and guide letters help students quickly locate entries, and “See also” features allow for easy cross-reference.

Each volume is enhanced by a helpful chronology and well-organized tables and charts. The final volume includes a comprehensive set index and appendixes for quick reference.

About the Author(s)

Cheryl Jakab, M.Sc., B.Ed., is a teacher, scientist, educator, and author whose academic interests focus on methods to explore children’s creativity. She is currently a Ph.D. researcher at the University of Melbourne, Australia. She has authored many successful teacher resource materials in science and technology, a children’s library series on global environmental issues, and has also edited Investigating, the Australian Science Teacher Association’s primary science journal.

David Keystone, B.A., Graduate Diploma of Special Education, is an author, experienced classroom teacher, and educational consultant in the learning and teaching of science to young students. He has lectured teachers-in-training and is committed to improving and supporting scientific literacy. His exemplary work with students and teachers has earned him national awards.

Cheryl and David have combined their complementary experience and expertise in coauthoring science education materials for teachers and children since 1990.
