Summary

During the Napoleonic Wars between France and other European nations in the early 1800s, Britain seized many U.S. ships and pressed American sailors into battle. Some Americans argued that these actions violated U.S. sovereignty and that the United States should declare war against Britain, but others argued that the British seizure of ships and impressment of sailors did not justify such action. Was the War of 1812 necessary, or was it essentially a war of choice fought for no compelling reasons?

This eBook examines the War of 1812 and delves into the pro and con arguments that surrounded it. It includes a timeline, primary sources, a bibliography, and a "Learn More About" chapter with more information on the topic.
