Summary

Victory over the French in the Seven Years' War in 1763 changed the relationship between Britain and its North American colonies. Parliament began imposing new taxes and regulations on Americans, igniting a series of protests and crises throughout the colonies over the next decade. Britain sent soldiers to uphold the law, and violence erupted in April 1775, when British and colonial forces clashed at the Battle of Lexington and Concord, beginning the American Revolution. Over the next year Americans debated whether they should declare independence and become a new nation. Should the colonies separate from Great Britain?

This eBook examines the American Revolution and delves into the pro and con arguments that surrounded it. It includes a timeline, primary sources, a bibliography, a "Learn More About" chapter with more information on the topic, and a "What If" chapter speculating on what might have happened had the colonies not separated from Britain.
