Summary

In 1849, violence erupted at the Astor Place Opera House in New York City, killing more than 20 people. A group of largely Irish immigrant, working-class fans of American actor Edwin Forrest were disrupting a performance by British actor William Macready, prompting the mayor to call out the state militia, which opened fire on the crowd. Who was primarily responsible for the deaths that resulted from the Astor Place Riot: the crowd, or the militia?

This eBook examines the Astor Place Riot and delves into the pro and con arguments over who was responsible for it. It includes a timeline, primary sources, a bibliography, and a "Learn More About" chapter with more information on the topic.
