Summary
Lauryn Hill made her mark as a musical powerhouse in the 1990s. A founding member of the Fugees, a hip-hop group made up of Hill, Pras Michel, and Wyclef Jean, Hill toured internationally with the group, known for its hits "Killing Me Softly with His Song," "Fu-Gee-La," and "Ready or Not." While the band was recording, Hill acted in various roles, including the movie Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit with Whoopi Goldberg. Though still a Fugee, Hill recorded her first solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which, to date, has sold more than 19 million copies worldwide. In 1999, Hill was rewarded for her efforts on that album, winning five Grammy Awards-becoming the first woman to do so. After finding such resounding success, Hill dropped out of the spotlight, performing only sporadic shows and building her family.
