Summary

The siege of Dien Bien Phu in 1954 was the culmination of a century-long struggle between the French and the Vietnamese for control of Vietnam. The French occupied Dien Bien Phu to protect their colony in Laos. When the Communist army lead by General Vo Nguyen Giap, the Viet Minh, took control of the surrounding hills, the French underestimated their capabilities and were eventually forced out of the country.
