A sexually transmitted disease (STD) is an infection that is passed from one person to another through sexual contact. Carol A. Ford, M.D., is an associate professor in the School of Medicine and in the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics with a subspecialty certification in adolescent medicine. She currently serves on the board of directors of the Society for Adolescent Medicine and on the editorial board of the Journal of Adolescent Health. Her peer-reviewed articles have appeared in numerous journals.
Elizabeth Shimer Bowers writes about health for books, magazines, and Web sites.
