Summary

Completely revised in full-color, Fashions of a Decade: The 1930s explores the social and cultural aspects of history by examining the role of fashion as it made its way through the Great Depression. Cheaper fabrics that imitated luxury items such as nylon and artificial silks became popular, along with garments that featured a more muted palette and longer, more flowing lines. Hollywood icons such as Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers set the mood for idealized glamour, as did the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, as they pushed the bounds of fashion to historic new heights.

About the Author(s)

Series editor Kathy Elgin was educated at the University of London. For 16 years she was head of publications at the Royal Shakespeare Company, where she wrote and researched articles on all aspects of Elizabethan life for the company’s theater programs and other publications. For Chelsea House, she authored Elizabethan England, one volume in the History of Fashion and Costume set.
