Summary

Jonas Salk: Microbiologist profiles the life and career of the scientist who discovered the first vaccine for polio, on the 50th anniversary of its success.

In the first half of the 20th century, the polio virus claimed the lives and well-being of hundreds of thousands of American children with no apparent end in sight. Thanks to the dedicated research of microbiologist Jonas Salk, the year 1955 witnessed the development of a vaccine containing a dead strain of the polio virus. Fifty years later, Salk is still celebrated as the man who helped the global community overcome one of the worst health epidemics in history. Until his death in 1995, Salk was actively engaged in AIDS research.
