About the Author(s)

Gary B. Nash received his Ph.D. from Princeton University. A co-director of the National Standards for United States History Project—a four-year project to develop broad national consensus for what constitutes excellence in the teaching and learning of history in the nation’s schools—he is currently Director of the National Center for History in the Schools at University of California, Los Angeles, where he teaches colonial and revolutionary American history. He is the author of college and pre-collegiate history texts. Nash is the general editor of Facts On File’s award-winning Encyclopedia of American History.

Carter Smith has written numerous books on U.S. and world history, including Presidents: Every Question Answered, Mapping Epidemics: A Historical Atlas of Disease, and One Giant Leap for Mankind. He also edited the five-volume Life and Times in 20th Century America, as well as atlases of African-American, Asian-American, and Hispanic-American history for Facts On File.
