Summary
Nicotine is a drug that exists in tobacco leaves, and it is most commonly inhaled in smoke from cigarettes, cigars, or pipes, or ingested from chewing tobacco. Nicotine is a stimulant that directly affects the brain almost immediately after being taken into the body. Over time, nicotine use can lead to changes in the chemistry of the brain, as well as harmful effects related to tobacco use, such as cancer and other illnesses. About the Author(s)
Dr. Emmeluth retired from the State University of New York (SUNY) system and moved to Savannah, Georgia. He became a member of the Biology Department of Armstrong State University in Savannah and an adjunct professor at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. At ASU, Dr. Emmeluth taught a variety of courses, including Microorganisms and Disease, Environmental Biology, Human Biology, Bioethics and a state mandated science content course for Early Childhood Education Majors (K-5). In December 2010 Dr. Emmeluth retired from the biology department at ASU. He continues to teach the Bioethics module at ASU and teaches Microbiology and Introductory Biology at Savannah Technical College.
Dr. Emmeluth received the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Two-Year College Biology Teaching Award from NABT. Dr. Emmeluth served as president of the National Association of Biology Teachers and was awarded NABT's highest honor, the Honorary Membership Award for Outstanding Contributions to Biology and Life Science Education in 2003. Dr. Emmeluth has authored several books in the Deadly Disease and Epidemics series, Typhoid Fever, Botulism (1st and 2nd editions), Plague (1st, 2nd, and 3rd editions), and Influenza (1st, 2nd, and 3rd editions), Fifth Disease and Staphylococcus aureus Infections (2nd edition). In addition to this book, he has authored the book Antibiotics, which is part of the Understanding Drugs series.
